Sally. Too Soon?

The day after Alexis talked with/to Ethelred about Lady Alba, Alexis approaches Gustav after his morning “ritual”.

“Gus. I’ve been thinking that we haven’t really talked about the first Sally. You conducted a great ceremony on the mountain, and I’m sure she was touched.”

“And it seems like you might still be grieving her loss. For such a strong love for Sally, you have always strongly rejected any suggestions to get a new mule to love.”

“And you still seem very unhappy with Sally” Alexis nods towards Sally in a near tree, “who has proven loyal and seems to just want you to love and accept her.”

“Do you need some time for grieving before we go? I need you unburdened while we seek out Bandesing’s operations.”

Alexis awaits Gustav’s response.

Alba Left Behind

Early in their stay along the Llanos river Alexis sits down next to Ethelred on the same log. Alexis starts talking when Ethelred looks up from his reading materials at him.

“Poor girl. I hope she doesn’t get herself killed before we get back. A lot of potential in our little miss of house Veronia.

“She’d sure like a message.” Alexis says, clearly intent on not going out of his way to make this happen.

Praise Raiden! The Great Protector of Aegir!

After a few days a routine develops, in the mornings, Rask trains with whomever will join him. After sword and bow practice, he swims with Red.

In afternoons Ca’armine prays to Raiden, Gus does Gus things, and Red and Alexis study.

Rask assists with camp chores in the afternoons and often continues to practice his sword forms, never using his Black Blade, and working diligently to advance with the flat of the blade and on pommel-strikes.

One afternoon, about five days into their stay on the banks of the Llanos River, Rask approaches before dinner as Ca’armine is concluding his afternoon prayer, he waits patiently for the right moment and then addresses the holy man,

“Brother, Can you teach me some prayers so that I might join you on occasion? I know a little from Service in the chapels at various Forts, but would like to learn more, and learn more stories of Raiden if you would be willing to share?”

What Do We Know About Bandesingh and the Dark Hand?

On a lovely sunny day, late in the early afternoon, after a fine day of exercises Rask addresses Alexis and the group as a whole.

Rask’s exercises of late have including live blade sparring with Ca’armine and Gus, the two of them taking turns wearing Red’s armor. Rask working to burn non-lethal longsword-strikes into his muscle and bone through repetition. Along the way he offers many suggestions to his Brothers-In-Raiden in the art of fighting defensively, his expertise in combat as evident as the Power of Aegir is represented and channeled by the tattoos on his chest and back. Rask wears little but the shield ring and boots, but he is maddeningly difficult to land a strike on. When he does get hit or cut he shrugs and fights on, accepting first aid at the end of the skirmish, and only after he opponent has been looked to.

Sitting in the midst of camp, clean, content, and sun-soaked, Rask speaks clearly and catches Alexis attention, and looks at Ca’armine as well.

“My Liege, our target, what do we really know about about them and their Band-Leader?

“Did they really steal away the Empress from her wedding?”

“Their slithering and spinning pets, and their truffle-hounds, we have met, and we seek their farrier now?”

Rask is clearly still paranoid not naming their enemies. In addition, the group may have noticed that he has been trying hard not use any of their names since they left the sewers.

Gus and Ca’armine he calls “Brother” or Brother Arrow an Brother Blade when he needs to specify, he calls Alexis “My Liege,” or “Boss.” Ethelred is too busy studying for Rask to talk to often, Rask usually address him as “Friend,” but Rask has been testing out a few nicknames, “Book” and “Ak’lyte,” “Hedgey,” but nothing has stuck yet.

A Week In The Grasslands

After the group has been dropped off by Hap, spent a day investigating the items they have, and enjoying being in the grasslands each of them starts delving into their own studies.

Over the next week, the weather seems to stay cold where the group is, even as spring seems to be taking hold around them. Frost greets the group on their gear and around the camp.

As well, during this week, backpacks and other buckles seem to be open when they were left closed. Perhaps this coincides with the occasional dreams of twisted creatures begging to be released when nothing seems to shackle them, struggling to open doors that finally open to rooms full of seemingly worthless treasure, or attempting to read books that contain text that seems to form never-ending and circular writings.

So Flexible, So Elusive

During the two weeks in the fort after Earyka has the Sword Chaotic, on several occasions in the dark (early morning, late at night) Alexis has gone outside the tent to conduct some soft chanting.

During one of these sessions Ethelred has come out of the tent and watched Alexis’ chanting. There’s clearly some sort of magic, but not any kind he can get a grasp of.

When Alexis finishes Ethelred asks him what he was trying to do.

Alexis responds “Ezrins lessons have gotten me thinking about my magical studies more. Some in the Collegium talk about magics that are more flexible, although always less powerful. The spell sometimes-called ‘Prestidigitation’ is a good example of this sort of flexibility, but there are precious few spells like this within the framework of the Collegium. Some say it’s the nature of the Collegium that the magic is so strict. Some say it is the nature of ‘true-magic’ itself to be rigid. Others say that after the betrayal of the 2nd age, Shasharak had something to do with limiting the nature of Collegium magic.” Alexis gives a nonchalant shrug.

“I’ve decided to spend some time seeing if I can tap into this more flexible magic. The darkness helps a little, but the old fort helps more. There are secrets kept in those walls” Alexis gestures towards the mostly dark Copper Hills Fort, with the torches visible at the gates and on the parapets. “Those centuries of secrets are my focus as I try to open myself to a little bit of raw energy that can be shaped to find the secrets and bring them to our aid. The aid of humanity.”

Alexis continues to look towards the fort in the darkness. His eyes a little squinted as if he’s trying to peer through the walls.

Collegia Arcana 101: Lecture 12 – The Weave of Warrens

Ezrin is careful about when he delivers his lectures to Ethelred, he checks around the tent, and does not lecture when traveling alongside any others. Nevertheless, After several lectures on each individual Collegia Arcana, Ezrin moves on to an overview of the Weave of Warrens

Magic everywhere and in everything exists in a semi-formalized state, some call this The Weave.. The power is refined, aspected, organized into something like themes, and these themes are what we refer to as Warrens. Some think of Warrens and magical tunnels in reality, others as strands of power that make up reality, some as other dimensions of existence outside of what most humans are normally capable of experiencing, and some old writing refer to them as Planes of Existence.

Many Warrens are accessible to mortals and gods alike; others are – Alien.  Some are virtually extinct, or inaccessible due to ignorance or deliberate rituals of sealing.  Some, in addition, are claimed and ruled over by elements either native to those warrens, or so fundamentally related to them as to make the distinction meaningless.

There is some disagreement as to whether certain Warrens are shared by various Powers, or if those Powers have their own, individual Warrens. For example, most believe the Pont-loi, Pannoi, and Poloi all share the same Warren. Many believe that that Traan-Vilu and Elgin share the same Warren. Most who espouse these types of beliefs hedge their propositions by including the caveat that the Powers occupy different parts of aspects of the Warren. This is most evident in the theories of The Omni-Warren, and Warren-Weave Duology.

I am about to list some Warrens. It is important to take care in speaking, writing or gesturing the names of Warrens. Especially with writing them and gestures. With writing about them, use plain letters, and simple abbreviations, lest you accidentally invoke the power of a Warren. Do not practice the gestures outside of practicing specific incantations that already include the gestures.

Some the Warrens Named by the Sages include:

Warrens particular to each God, or at least each Major God

Elemental Warrens, Air, Fire, Earth, Water.

And more, such as:

Infernal, Abyssal, Cthonic, Oceanic, Swamp, Elements, Celestial, Astral, Etheric, Elven, Dwarven, Demonic, Gnomish, Cold, Lighting, Stone, Wood/Trees, Light, Darkness, Healing, Shadow, Death, Undeath/Hunger, Draconic, Order, Chaos.

Here are some proposed groupings or Meta-Warrens:

[Here Ezrin draws various web-like relationships between different groups of Warrens in the sand, using simple non-arcane one to three letter abbreviations for the various Warrens as he lists them]

Death – Undeath/Hunger – Chaos – Abyssal – Cthonic

Water – Cthonic – Oceanic – Swamp

Healing – Light – Dian-Cecht -Celestial – Sun

Wood – Plants – Oo-Rin – TyLin

Demonic – Infernal – Abyssal – Chaos

Dwarven – Gnomish – Goblin – Orc

Celestial – Anahsar – Ishtar – Raiden – Torr-Van -Oo-Rin – Ponnoi/Poloi

Earth – Stone – Traan’Vilu – Algin

Fire-Water-Earth-Air

Fire-Steam-Water-Mud-Earth-Lightning-Air

There are more, some get lost in proposing all the possible relationships. Literally lost according to some stories, pulled into a maze of Warrens and lost…

You can see why it is important to use tried and tested materials, sigils, gestures and vocalizations when calling upon magical energies. The potential to connect with unintended energies is very high, and the consequences of doing so can be truly catastrophic.

Permission, But Only If You Say So

To the most suitable secretary under Nardor-Threp, Head Marshall of the Collegiate of the Esteemed, Keeper of the Keys, Bearer of the Mysterious Inner Flame, and the most previous Patriarch of the old Sutheron Council,

It seems nearly-pretentious to take any time with the matter with which I write you today, but I thought it best.

During the treasure-hunting and fact-finding myself and my companions are currently undertaking we have been exposed to artifacts, mysteries, and strange fellows with strange magics. As one might expect, my very-clever engineering companion has nearly discovered some causal links within the pre-first circles of the greater materials sciences. For the time being my engineer explores in darkness, but it’s clear our understandings of the material sciences could benefit from his insightful nature, bestowed upon him from a relatively generous deity.

Sorry for such a trivial bit of minutia. Any rejoinder correspondence before spring would be appreciated if there is time. If not, I will endeavor to navigate as best as I am able.

Your humble fellow collegian,

Alexis Laelius, Adept, sponsee of Nardor-Threp, Bearer of the Mysterious Inner Flame, Keeper of the Keys, Head Marshall of the Collegiate of the Esteemed, and the Ultimate Patriarch of the old Sutheron Council

Each One Teach One

Ezrin approaches Alexis one morning g after breaking the fast.

“Alexis Laelius, I believe learning the Recollection Perfextion incantations from you would help me teach Ethelred. I would better be able remember the lectures and be able share them more accurately. Would you be willing to teach me?”

Clean the Rabbit .. Clean the Rabbit

After categorizing the materials around the rabbit the next task it to actually source the desired material from the creature. Red turns to Gustav for help.

“Gustav can you help me with this rabbit. I want to use and save as much of it as possible. I have a desire to preserve the heart, the eyes, the ears. As well as use the fur, skin and guts. One paw I should keep, for luck… if there is such a thing.

I do not posses the skills with rendering an animal that you do. Can you please help me?”
