When Did the Sky Break?

A few nights into the camp east of Nodden-Torr after the group has left the time-vault, well out past the fire. A pale shape sits on a branch a little above him, about the size of the owl. Alexis paces below.

“Vorgoth told me no mortal had crossed his bridge since the sky broke.”

“I’ve been taking that for the Great Betrayal. Two other possible dates. The Great Upheaval. The Time of Wyrms and Darkness. Both of them sit well before the Second League.”

“But the coins in the griffins’ nest were second age. Every one of them. Whoever built that place, almost certainly built it in the second age, so both the other dates are too early.”

“Or something inside the second age…”

Alexis shrugs. He turns the Collegium ring, thinking of all the history books he now wishes he had actually read.

“But maybe I need to look at this all different.”

“He’s a fire giant. A giant’s words, a human calendar.”

“Some in the Collegium say fire giants live in volcanos. Some say they come from an entirely different plane.” A pause. “I had him in front of me and there was so much I would have liked to have asked him.”

“If the sky broke and put him here… then it’s his people’s word for their own arrival and it has nothing to do with our second age at all.”

Alexis gestures farewell to his audience, but it’s not there. Surely he would have heard it fly away. His hearing has been much better since he started wearing the ring of the Spider.

Three Cheers for Decadence

A couple of days into the camp east of Nodden-Torr after the Crimson Calling leaves the time-vault. The evening meal is finished and nobody has moved yet. Alexis tips his hat back off his forehead and turns to Ethelred.

“I’m thinking back to you getting the bomba fruit seed, and planting it in Ty-Lin’s garden. That fruit. It resonated with decadence. It was a tropical fruit in deep winter.”

Alexis looks into the fire.

“Many in the Collegium say that the fey deal in decadence. And Hadonis. Oils. Salves. Somehow he still had dates after 2 years. And a very decadent god.”

Alexis looks up at his companions.

“Many call Sutheron a decadent city, and for good reason. You can get bomba fruits there 3 months of the year.” A slight shrug. “I miss bomba fruits.”

“Do our collegium writings say anything about the ‘school’ of decadence?”

To protect a shield

Close to the end of leveling up.

In the evening as everyone is gathered eating Red speaks.

“I am going to need a shield to complete my next task for the Collegium. I do not believe we have such an item on hand?

If we do not have such an item I will need to enlist the help of Alexis to try and detect the closest shield to us.”

From fire through water to ice

While we wait to climb the stairs again and face the wrath of the fire…

Red sits and spreads a few of his items in front of him.

He sets the wooden bowl in his lap.

He sprinkles a bit of silver dust into the bowl.

He lets out a few drops of water into the bowls.

He places the blue stone he has on top of the silver dust.

He take out the lens of his bulls eye lantern and sets into the bowl on top the blue stone.

He holds a clear crystal at arm length above the bowl.

Long he spends just sitting in that position. Holding open in his mind and how he is able summon a flame.

Long he concentrates on the effects of water.

Long he concentrates on how he is able to flow between heat and cold.

Long he concentrates on the effects of fire.

Long he breathes.

Long his takes his mind back in time to the crystal with the man frozen. The moment when he touched the crystal and was transported into cold.

Long he takes mind mind back to the cold from the wolf that shielded them from the danger of the Orcs.

Long he dwells on the true distance between flame and ice.

Slowly he evokes and slowly he attempts to bring forth a cold ‘flame’ from within.

What About Raiden?

It’s the morning after the group camped at “Ty-Lynn’s Garden”. Morning settles soft over the camp, the mist clinging low to the bedrolls and the blackened stones of the fire. A crow mutters somewhere in the trees. Alexis stands near what’s left of the coals, warming his hands more out of habit than need.

“Since Warder Yule,” he says, eyes on the faint embers, “and especially after what happened last night, I’ve been thinking about where my magic comes from.” He straightens a little, turning his hat absently in his hands as he speaks. “Avv’s realm has its uses—finding what’s hidden, drawing the unseen to light. But I’m not her servant. Never was. And since we left Ghanil, treasure-hunting hasn’t been high on the list.”

He looks up then, toward Ca’armine, but his voice carries to all of them. “The name of Avv… tends to make people uneasy. You’ve felt it. Yule certainly did.” He gives a small, crooked smile—more acknowledgment than humor.

“I trained with the Collegium,” he goes on. “They teach you to touch where you choose, not a servant any one realm. And I’d like to be in greater harmony with you; my Raidenites.”

Turning to face them fully, the mist curls around his boots, “Are you willing to help me make the shift?”

Varis? Verisimiss? In Vivo Veritas?

One evening after a long day of careful travel through the forest North of Gahnil, Rask quietly asks the group,

“What do we know about this Veris-a-miss? That’s the same as Varis right? The one Sheyeeni worked under who is hunting us? He’s a mage and he has access to scrying magic, but it is not portable scrying magic right? He’s got a henchman named Thraan? The cousin of that… mage who ambushed us in the collegium? Thraan’s a bit of a duelist, Shyeeni is probably a sneaky assassin type fighter…”

“The have the orcs, what other resources could they bring to the fight? You’ve defeated or suborned several of his people already…”

Rask looks at Alexis first, but glances at Elthered and Gustav, as well as Ca’rmine and Alikimo.

Nice Scrolls

The group is a few days past E’armos and where Ethelred got his new set of scrolls. Ethelred has gotten a good night sleep, and Alexis is talking with him on the road before he’s quite started studying his new scrolls.

“Morning, Red. Collegium petitioner, if we’re being proper about it” Alexis takes on a brief mocking air of formality.

“Hey. Before you crack into those new scrolls, I’d like to hear what you pulled from the first set—and maybe what you think this next batch will reveal.

So tell me—what tools have you found for us? Perhaps a compass to Ezrin? Something to burn out cursed relics? A way to sniff out immortal energies using your lack-of-knowing as a tool?” Alexis leans in, clearly eager to hear what Ethelred is excited about.

Who Are The Allies of The Wilderness God?

While the group travels across the Westlands away from the First Gate, Alexis addresses Gustav across the campfire one night.

“Gus, level with me.

Last time I asked why you’ll take favors from non-human gods but turn your back on the Grand-Matron of humanity. You sidestepped it, pressed the VahnYir bracers into my hands, and paid the price yourself—a brave move, but it felt like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Since then, you’ve kept refusing the Grand-Matron’s workings, and then turned down a solid tool against Bandesinge and blood magic, and yet you’re fine with the collegium’s spells and Ca’armine’s gifts. I’m not here to put you on trial—I’m here to get this team through the the trials we face in one piece. To do that, I need more than a yes-or-no list. I need your why. If there’s a line you won’t cross, show me where it runs and what it protects. Your compass matters.

Ca’armine takes blessings from the other human gods. I understand that map. Help me read yours.

So talk to me, Gus: why turn down help from allies? What do you trust, what don’t you, and how can I lead so your convictions make us stronger—not weaker?”

Alexis patiently waits for Gustav’s answer. There is no rush on his face or in his body.

Our Lost Comrade. Bravest of Us

The group has stopped for lunch after they’ve left the First Gate (but before they encounter Illceros’ Spiders).

Alexis addresses Gustav and Ca’armine. “I’m not sure about you Raiden boys, but these western lands have gotten me thinking more about…” Alexis puts his arms out “the bigger things.”

“You both chose to give up Dauntless” Alexis holds up an apologetic hand to Ca’armine “even though you weren’t fully aware of what that meant” Alexis says to only Ca’armine.

“With some time and space, how are you feeling about the ‘Collegium’ holding such a powerful artifact in your cause?”

Alexis looks between Gustav and Ca’armine.

Each Morning

Each morning when Red sits down to study he pull out his dagger and the stone. He sets the stone down before him. He holds the dagger with care. He goes over each part of the spell to bring flame from the blade. Each gesture, each word, each change in temperature, each way the energy moves. Careful he is to not actually bring forth the flame, but to merely warm the blade. Attention is paid to how the energy moves, where it comes from, how it interacts, where it goes. Slowly he practices. Always aware of the presence of the stone.

While traveling Red will take as much time as he can in the cart, going back over the scrolls. While he appreciates they have a ‘natural order’ he attempts to find other ways to organize them. First he just mixes them up, like one would a deck of cards. A fresh take on an old subject.

Next he looks for similarities and rearranges them around theme, common words, general similarities and even opposites. Each reordering of the scrolls reveals new dimensions to the words.

Each morning after study Red approaches Alexis, stone in his palm and ask it today is the day. So far, no.
