The Mystery of the Crown and Hammer

Over some breakfast since leaving the 1st Gate, Alexis is thinking aloud

“Without Drennos I can go back to my musings.” after a little pause Alexis continues.
“I’m still thinking about the Hammer and Crown, and what the Collegium is supposed to be kept from knowing. What about the history or the nature of those artifacts is supposed to stay hidden? Since nobody but villains talks to non-humans” Alexis says with sarcasm “it seems reasonable that the knowledge that the Collegium doesn’t have was acquired from non-humans… perhaps from some long-lived creature or from some lost library.”

“Perhaps the Crown and Hammer could be items that Dwarves would rally behind, but it seems like they would have to be held by a Dwarf, otherwise they wouldn’t be objects to trade, but objects to use.”

“The simple explanation, the uneducated explanation, is that these items are connected and together they form a symbol of royalty. Similar to a crown and scepter.”

“Less intuitive is that they are somehow items used by some ‘rightful chosen of the Maker’, and the hammer is the real item. It forges something. But this gets into wild speculation.”

“What would be a threat to our enemies, or a great boon to them, from those items, that the Collegium wouldn’t be aware of?” Alexis thinks on this while they all eat together.

So Many Lost (Dwarven) Cities

At some point when the group is all together after Zyrithack has been enslaved in the black blade. The group is talking about what happened. Alexis speaks.

“Zyrithack mentioned Thun-Bül-Dor. Given the twisted path Zyrithack took to get to this location at this time, it could be anywhere. Given how close the legendary dwarven city of Dura-Intun was, maybe Thun-Bül-Dor is just as close. We know there are Dwarves under the Twins, and that the dwarves used to control the top of the Twins as well. There are Dwarves under Mount Sutheron, and perhaps they used to control its peak as well. Perhaps Mount Sutheron was Thun-Bül-Dor. Or the fabled Nadden-Tor. Maybe every major mountain used to hold a dwarven city. Maybe there are old dwarven cities abutting Middlebar fort. That could be a major boon for the rebels if that was true.” Alexis thinks on this for a moment.

“Maybe Mount Lanos has a dwarven city. Maybe Thun-Bül-Dor. Maybe Mount Kobos. Maybe even Nadden-Tor!” Alexis gets a far-off look and a smile starts creeping up his face. “Or… Mount Avernus…!” Alexis looks more serious “No. That doesn’t seem right.”

“I need to get a map of all the major mountains. They could all have dwarven cities!”

How we get out

While the group is initially looking through the dragon hoard and starting to group it, Alexis addresses the group.

“I’ve been thinking about how we can leave with the crown and hammer, and whatever other treasures we can carry out of here. Obviously I’m hoping that something in this hoard can help us, but barring that, we need to start thinking about a plan.”

“The simplest plan is to hide as much as we can and just walk out through the dwarf front door. They haven’t questioned us yet, and presumably will continue this trend. Of course, the problem is what happens when we leave the ‘shelter’ of the dwarves? We’ll have two kinds of orcs waiting for us as well as whatever Dark Hand have arrived. Bad. But even if we can somehow slip out the dwarf-front-door unnoticed, there will surely be Dark Hand outside the cave. Which leaves somehow trying to get through the whole of the orc stronghold to get out at the saddle of the mountain. Doesn’t seem likely.”

“Alternately, I feel pretty confident we can scout from this end under the water over to the dwarf cells. We can probably hold our breaths long enough with the fast-flowing water to get to the cells. We arrange a couple ‘ropes’ together to shuttle our gear and the treasure. Cold, dark, risky. But I think we can do it!”
“Of course we face the same challenges once we’re at the cells, but perhaps with some more breathing room… but perhaps the Dark Hand waiting for us.” Alexis gives a slight shrug combined with a nod to the side with his head. “Clearly a lot of factors.”

“Another idea. We could try and wait them out. Perhaps we can sustain ourselves here long enough for the Dark Hand to crush themselves against the dwarves and their maze, or at least greatly weaken themselves greatly. This is not my favorite plan, but if it works, the three of you might be able to get some rest down here” Alexis is addressing Mavon, Skelor, and Telosh. He then looks around the dark, damp cave. “Not that I would choose this over civilization for a true rest.”

“The last idea I’ve had so far is to see about solving the dwarf curse and seeing if that could lead us to that horrible room where Gus felt the grave. It still doesn’t get us out, but it would put us behind a secret door and uncovering more mysteries might uncover secret dwarven ways into, and out-of, the mountain. Putting that thing out of it’s misery would help me sleep more soundly… assuming it doesn’t get it’s hands on me and prevent me from ever sleeping again.” Alexis gives another slight shrug combined with a nod to the side with his head.

Alexis looks at the group, still understandably engrossed in the treasures. Alexis lets the silence let the group know he’s ready to hear their thoughts.

That that was left for the Dark Hand

(while recovering from the damage of the orc encounters near the cave)

“Alexis, the Dark Hand is breaking open the tombs of the Dwarves, breaking those beautifully made cover stones, raiding any items held with. Any treasure, any items of power… those are all now within the grasp of our enemy. I know your decision was probably the righteous one, the human one, the honorable one. But how do you feel about it now?”

Note left with the bones at the door with the Deepforge rune

(Drostan Deepforge rune in the upper-left corner)
In the name of the 2nd age alliance between the humans and dwarves, we have chased the stink-lizards from your under-caves. In addition we have recovered the lost axe of Drostan Deepforge. Dura-Intun is your homeland and the various invaders have been greatly weakened. The Dark Hand is our enemy and we wish to work to throw them from this land.

These bones were discovered in the nest of a cavern predator in the cave, and we hope you will know how to lay them to rest.
