Threatened Beggar

The man on the street had grabbed onto Ca’armine’s leg with an iron grip. He then told Ca’armine “You may have killed the Snake, but the Wolf still hunts and spider weaves its web, and the King Behind the throne is coming.”

Seeing that Rask was about to draw his sword on the man, Alexis threw himself between Rask and the old man. After the threat of Rask’s sword has passed, and Alexis gets back to his feet, he looks at Rask with concern.

“Are you doing okay? Did he remind you of someone from your past?”

  1. Rask shakes his head, looks back at the beggar suspiciously, and replies to Alexis.

“No. He held Ca’armine tightly, and his words seemed like a threat.”

Rask waves his left hand, and then tucks it behind his back, glancing again back at the ‘beggar.’

  2. Alexis acknowledges Rasks words with a couple small nods. The beggar has high-tailed it by the time Alexis turns to Ca’armine “He [the beggar] appeared to be in your cause.”

Based on inflection Alexis is clearly asking Ca’armine what he wants to do with the situation, including the near-killing.

  3. “We should be wary, these walls have ears, moreso than any other I fear.”

    Ca’armine paces.

    “Beggar? I think not.”

He looks at his companions. Paces again. Looks back at them. They seem to be waiting for him to finish the thought.

“We are much more conspicuous than we realize, I think– and easier to predict. We should consider new strategies, if we want to avoid fighting every battle against every foe. I am not at all sure our friends, high or low, are people we can truly trust.”

    • With Ca’armine’s talk of threats all around, seen and unseen, about having no allies, and with Rask nearly killing the unarmed beggar Alexis looks sniffs and pinches some air to see if he can sense any fading magic that might be affecting his companions.

Looking at Ethelred and Gus, they seem the same; uncomfortable in the city, but talking about looking for rat.

Seemingly unsettled, but somehow satisfied, Alexis joins his companions as they move away from the area. As they move away Alexis continues his interaction with Ca’armine.

“Friend priest, this paran-… um… growing concern. Did it come on when the beggar grabbed you? When you heard his words? Can we [waving his hands at Rask, Ethelred, and Gustav] be trusted, or are we friends, high or low? Who, or what, do you sense is hearing you right now; spying on you?”

      • “I don’t have that sense, but scrying is arcane magic, not a type to which I am sensitive. The false beggar was there for a reason, and I sense that reason was not, motivated by our success.”
